It was patented as a sperm collector
The application describes laboratory equipment, and that was the point.
United States patent 5,807,236 is titled "Device for discreet sperm collection". It was filed in 1996 by Steve Shubin, a former police officer, and granted in September 1998. The drawings show a tube, an insert and a cap, and nothing in the text describes what the thing is actually sold for.
That framing was deliberate and practical. A patent application is a public document that has to pass an examiner, and clinical language passes where a plain description of a sex toy invites trouble. The same instinct shaped the product itself: the housing is a torch, because a torch on a shelf is not a conversation.
What to do with it
The discretion the patent was written around is still the first thing worth deciding on. A full-size case is 25 centimetres of solid plastic that has to live somewhere, and the compact and pocket versions exist because most people are buying storage as much as they are buying a texture.
If you share a home, decide where it goes before you order. A drawer that locks, or a case that reads as a torch, is the difference between using it and leaving it in the box.
